Dr. Oz Gets It, Too!

I am currently reading the book, You Staying Young by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Roizen and was surprised and very happy to see an entire chapter acknowledging the value of doing things naturally.

This medical doctor actually encourages his reader to eliminate synthetic chemicals from the home.

Here is a summary of some of his recommendations. Yeah!!!

AT FRONT DOOR

  • Leave your shoes here. Shoes track toxins such as pesticides and lead, which soil carpet and contaminate children and pets.

IN KITCHEN

IN BEDROOM

  • Commercial brands of carpet and clothing-spot cleaners cause blood disorders, as well as liver and kindey damage. Use essential-oil based cleaners like Thieves Household Cleaner concentrate instead.

IN CLOSETS

  • If you dry clean your clothes, remove plastic wrap which traps the chemicals (PERC) used to clean them and air out on porch. PERC has been linked to cancer and kidney and nervous system damage. Instead of dry cleaning, I wash everything (dress pants, linen and cashmere) in the gentle cycle with cold water. If I’m feeling a little lazy, I will take them to the cleaners for a professional pressing.

GENERAL CLEANING

  • Avoid using products containing chlorine bleach. All you need to clean your home is White Distilled Vinegar, Baking Soda, Borax, Thieves Household Cleaner concentrate and some essential oils if you like.

IN BATHROOM

  • Filter your water with a carbon filter to remove chlorine and other bad stuff.
  • Avoid deodorants and anti-perspirants with Aluminum, which is linked to Alzheimer’s. Young Living has two great deodorants: Aromaguard Mountain Mint and Meadow Mist. In France, they use nothing at all 🙂
  • Avoid products with Phthalates, which block endocrine function and Parabens, which have been linked to breast cancer. Please read your labels.
  • Avoid Air Fresheners, which are toxic when combined with the ozone. I love to create natural sprays with essential oils and distilled water. My favorite natural air freshener is to blend 5 drops of Christmas Spirit essential oil blend with 1 oz of distilled water in a glass spray bottle. This works great in a bathroom, office or inside a stinky garbage can or shoes.

OUTSIDE HOUSE

  • Lawn and garden pesticides and herbicides contaminate groundwater as well as indoor air. He notes, “Weeds may cause eyesores, but they won’t cause cancer.”
